Kno recibe una inyección económica para su tablet doble
Cuando hace unos meses los responsables de Kno, un nuevo tablet, lo presentaron, ya consiguieron mucha atención por parte de prensa y público. Se trataba de un tablet con gran presencia debido a que incluía doble pantalla para reproducción de archivos y contenidos.
Aunque llevábamos un tiempo sin oír hablar de él, ahora sus creadores confirman que todo va bien y que han recibido una importante inyección económica.
El Kno es un tablet con dos pantallas táctiles unidas de 14 pulgadas, cada una de resolución 1440 x 900 píxeles, y de aspecto muy llamativo. La intención de sus responsables es llevarla a escuelas y universidades y convertirla en algo común en distintos sectores. Su precio será de 1000 dólares (unos 780 euros), y aunque parece un producto más caro de lo habitual, ha despertado gran interés entre varias empresas.
Tal es así que la empresa ya ha recibido una aportación económica de 46 millones de dólares para financiar el proyecto. Con éste aporte, el desarrollo del tablet está garantizado, y ya se están negociando acuerdos con editoriales de libros de texto para intentar modernizar la manera en la que los estudiantes llevarán sus libros a clase. Mediante el uso del Kno, sus responsables quieren que los estudiantes lo usen para tener sus libros en formato digital, hacer ejercicios, tomar notas y realizar exámenes, entrar en internet, usar aplicaciones educativas, disfrutar de archivos multimedia enviados por sus profesores, e intercambiar apuntes, datos y programas entre los compañeros de la escuela.
En unos meses comprobaremos la eficacia de éste producto y si de verdad cambiará la forma en la que los estudiantes aprenderán en las escuelas.

Beethoven se convierte en altavoz portátil
Altavoces para reproductores de sonido portátil los hay a montones, prácticamente de cualquier cosa que podáis imaginar. Pero lo cierto es que no pensábamos que un busto de Ludwig van Beethoven pudiera servir también para ello.
El producto que nos encontramos en Urban Outfitters nos lo confirma: ¿y qué tal sonará la música reproducida a través de Beethoven?.
Éste busto-altavoz de 2 vatios tiene 6 pulgadas de alto y cuenta con control de volumen, bajo, y sobreagudo. Se encuentra potenciado por cuatro pilas AAA o por conexión USB con un ordenador, e incluye posibilidad de conexión a dispositivos de sonido portátiles con salida de auriculares.
El sonido del speaker sale del pecho del gran maestro de la música clásica, y de momento, para que tenga un aspecto más tradicional, sólo se encuentra disponible en color blanco. Su precio es de 25 libras inglesas, unos 30 euros al cambio de moneda.

Panasonic muestra tres nuevos notebooks ToughBook
Panasonic es bien conocida por su línea de notebooks resistentes ToughBook, de la cual ya os hemos hablado en otras ocasiones. Ésta vez la compañía anuncia tres nuevos portátiles englobados dentro de ésta colección.
Se trata de los modelos ToughBook F5, ToughBook N9 y ToughBook S9.
La principal diferencia que caracteriza a estos tres ordenadores portátiles es el tamaño de su pantalla. El N9 y el S9 tienen pantalla LCD de 12.1 pulgadas, mientras que el modelo F5 cuenta con una de mayor tamaño: con un total de 14.1 pulgadas. Por otro lado, hay algunas características idénticas en los tres notebooks: como la posibilidad de elegir entre dos procesadores: Intel Core i5-560M a 2.66GHz o Intel Core i7-640M a una velocidad de 2.8GHz. Además de esto, todos incluyen 4GB de memoria RAM expansible hasta 8GB, disco duro de 640GB o un disco duro opcional de estado sólido de 256GB.
Para finalizar hay que sumar características habituales en todos los ToughBook de Panasonic, como conexión Wi-Fi y WiMax, sistema operativo Windows 7 Professional, y una batería que puede durar hasta 14.5 horas.
Llegarán próximamente a Japón en tres colores distintos: negro, rojo o blanco.

Bing's Stefan Weitz Believes That While Google May Do Search Faster, They Do It Smarter
This week Google announced the introduction of Instant which is a definite revolution in the way we search. Integrating things like prediction, dynamic results, and scroll to search, Google Instant will shave some serious user hours off search. However, it doesn't seem to be a very new concept. In fact, it seems that last year Bing's search engine was tweaked to produce Real Live Search, which loaded full results pages as users typed.
Chinese native turned Australian transplant, Long Zheng developed the app in just a few hours he said to Tech Crunch last year, and it seems that Microsoft is excited about this feature still; even though Google Instant generated a lot of buzz and most people weren't even aware that Real Live Search existed.
Stefan Weitz, Bing's director, did a Technology Live interview with USA Today were he talks about how Bing is trying to do search smarter, and that faster doesn't always equal smarter. Weitz explains that it's a good thing to produce search results quickly, but that doesn't always mean it is going to be the type of results that users are looking for thus not really saving them any time.
He also says that combining with Yahoo is helping them not only gain access to more information, but with the increase of information Bing can bring users more relevant results faster. "When you think about state-of-the-art searching, it should be less about searching and more about finding" says Weitz.

Google Maps for Mobile Android Now Offers "Walking Navigation" and Update Search Bar
It looks like having to ask for directions from strangers on the street is going to become a thing of the past…if you are an Android user, that is. Google has added a "walking navigation" feature to the latest version of Google Maps for Android. This feature seems to be a combination of turn-by-turn GPS navigation, satellite imagery, and walking directions.
After entering the address of their destination, users choose "walking" from the navigation icon and the application will begin to guide you along things like sidewalks, overpasses and pedestrian pathways. Your phone will even vibrate when you are reaching the next turn. The app will have your phone act as a compass of sorts; the map will even rotate as you turn your phone.
Users also have the option of using an improved version of Street View for Google Maps on Android if the Satellite View isn't cutting it for them. With Street View's "smart navigation" feature, all users have to do is move the penman around to change their vantage point on the map to get a better sense of where exactly they are. To get access to Street View, you will have to download the Street View on Google Maps update for the Android Market Place.
In addition to the new walking feature, there is a new Google Maps search bar that can be quickly accessed at the top of the screen. After entering your query you can open Places and find your current location. Users can view the ratings of establishments, good offered and their prices and cross streets to better locate the places they are searching for.
Google Maps for Mobile 4.5 is available on all Androids that run 1.6 or better.

5 WordPress Plugins to Keep in Touch with Your Blog Co-Authors
Maintaining multi-author blogs is hard but it definitely pays off. A multi-author blog provides the variety of insights, perspectives and blogs. Most feeds in my reader are from multi-author blogs – namely because I enjoy the daily variety they offer.
Creating the strong community of guest authors and contributors around your blog is gold: the guest bloggers would
- Come daily to comment their own (and each other's) posts,
- Link to and cite their guest posts from many other places they contribute to,
- Share their guest posts across their social media channels, etc.
However building this community is definitely hard and takes plenty of time, effort and commitment.
No matter what type of multi-author community you are building (paid authors, regular columns, one-time guest contributions, etc), the following WordPress plugin will let you effectively keep in touch with your authors, invite them back to your site and develop stronger contacts with each other:
1. Email Users
Email Users lets you send a newsletter to all your registered authors (or even subscribers). How you use this plugin depends on the type of the blog you run and the type of relationships you have with your co-authors. Surely, I wouldn't overuse it but it should work great for important updates and announcements.
As far as you can see from the screenshot below, the plugin supports a few mail formats and some variables. It also lets you choose the author names to send the newsletter to or just send to everyone:
2. Peter's Collaboration E-mails
This plugin updates both the blog owner and the contributor on the submitted guest post status:
- When a Contributor user submits an article for review: The plugin e-mails a list of approvers of your choice, letting them know that there is a post ready for review, and giving them a link to edit the post.
- When a post is approved: The Contributor user gets an e-mail saying that their post has been approved and who it was approved by. If the post was directly published, the author is given a link to read the post as the whole world sees it. If the post is scheduled to be published, the author is informed of the time that their post will go live. When the post does go live, the author will get another e-mail informing him / her of that.
- When a post's status is changed back to "draft" from "pending": The original Contributor user gets an e-mail saying that their post has been reverted back to a draft, along with a link to edit and re-submit the post.
3. Peter's Post Notes for WordPress
Peter's Post Notes for WordPress: this plugin allows to post quick private notes to go with posts. It is thus a very handy collaboration tool as an editor can suggest a quick fix, the contributor can report a status or ask for the advice etc – and the whole conversation is forever saved with the post for you to refer to it whenever you need to. Besides, when used in combination with the above plugin, the note recipient will be updated of a new note via email.
The notes are added right to the extra panel added to the sidebar (once you save the draft or publish the post, the note is saved as well).
4. Admin Msg Board
Admin Msg Board is a plugin for WordPress that will add a messaging system in your WordPress admin area. Messages can have up to 140 characters (ala your own internal blog Twitter), and you can choose whether to send a message to all writers or select recipients
5. Private Messages For WordPress
This plugin allows users of WordPress blog send private messages (PM) to each other. The number of PMs can be controlled via the plugin option page.
Otherwise, an email will be sent to user when a new PM is received.

3D Shot Cam, el 3D se acerca a los más pequeños
Si bien el 3D está cada día más cerca de nosotros, la 3D Shot Cam es la cámara diseñada precisamente para acercar esa tecnología a los más pequeños.
La 3D Shot Cam es una cámara compacta diseñada con dos focales, lo que significa que captura dos fotografías al mismo tiempo, que al verlas con las lentes especiales crean el efecto 3D.
La 3D Shot Cam está diseñada para un público infantil, que ronda los 12 años. El dispositivo cuenta además con un sensor de imagen de 0.3 Megapíxeles, tarjeta de memoria con capacidad de hasta 8 GB y esta diseñada de forma muy compacta. Pesa sólo 100 gramos y sus dimensiones son 55 x 142 x 30 milímetros.
La comercialización de la 3D Shot Cam comenzará en 2011 en Japón y se podrá aquirir por unos 55 euros.

Playstation Move vs Wii Motion
Playstation Move es el nuevo sistema de Sony similar al que utiliza la Wii, el Wii Motion, para controlar la infinidad de juegos que hay en el mercado de la consola de la marca, la Playstation 3.
En realidad, el dispositivo Playstation Move apenas supone diferencias con la Wii Motion, ya que se basa en la misma tecnología.
Lo único que añade la Playstation Move para diferenciarse de su competidora y veterana rival la Wii Motion es la cámara y algunos sensores, capaces de detectar los movimientos e incorporarlos directamente al modo de juego.
Parece como si Sony se hubiera quedado sin ideas y sólo adaptase el dispositivo Wii Motion a su compañía incorporando la cámara.
Otra historia es lo que ha hecho la tercera en juego, Xbox, que ha creado un sistema mucho más revolucionario con una cámara con sensores de movimiento, 3D y audio capaz de trasladar cada uno de nuestros gestos a la pantalla.

XWave, para controlar el iPhone con la mente
Éste accesorio del que os vamos a hablar es, cuanto menos, curioso. Se llama XWave, y consiste en un sistema de control que nos permite manejar el iPhone directamente con la mente.
¿Para qué queremos pantallas táctiles si podemos usar la mente?, ese parece ser el concepto que plantea éste producto.
El dispositivo funciona de la siguiente manera. Te colocas un headset en la cabeza, y tu actividad eléctrica cerebral se convierte en señales que te permiten controlar el iPhone sin mover ni un dedo. Los detalles sobre el producto no son muy específicos, pero parece ser que el XWave tiene una base que se apoya en tu nuca y que recopila señales eléctricas que cambian en base a tus pensamientos. Para funcionar, obviamente, el dispositivo se apoya en varias aplicaciones que te permiten controlar la librería musical del iPhone y otros contenidos. No obstante, el producto aún está en una fase inicial, y sus creadores se encuentran buscando desarrolladores que puedan crear nuevas aplicaciones para darle más posibilidades.
No sólo funciona con iPhone, también con iPad e iPod Touch. Su precio es de 100$, unos 80 euros.

Telus lanza en Canadá el móvil LG Shine Plus
La compañía Telus Mobility de Canadá ha añadido un nuevo modelo de teléfono móvil de la fabricante LG a su catálogo. Se trata del dispositivo LG Shine Plus, que puede conseguirse al precio de 300 dólares sin necesidad de contrato.
Éste smartphone parte de sistema operativo Android 2.1 y cuenta con características similares al LG Ally.
Su pantalla es táctil de 3.2 pulgadas con resolución WVGA y resolución de 480 x 800 píxeles. En cuanto a memoria interna para almacenamiento, dispone de 100MB que pueden expandirse a través de tarjetas microSD de 32GB.
También incluye cámara de 5 megapíxeles, y un teclado QWERTY completo.

En camino el tablet eLocity A7
En octubre de éste año 2010 aterrizará en tiendas norteamericanas un nuevo tablet con pantalla de 7 pulgadas. Se trata del tablet eLocity A7, que contará con sistema operativo Android 2.2.
Ya se encuentra disponible en reserva en algunos comercios de Estados Unidos (como Amazon) y la demanda parece estar siendo elevada.
Éste tablet eLocity ofrece una resolución de 800 x 480 píxeles en su pantalla de siete pulgadas, con procesador a velocidad de 1GHz, y tecnología interna nVidia Tegra II. Además de 512MB de memoria RAM DDR2, el eLocity dispone de 4GB de memoria interna flash para el almacenamiento.
A esto hay que sumar conexión Wi-Fi, acceso Bluetooth, y una cámara de 1.3 megapíxeles, sin olvidar salida HDMI y puerto USB 2.0. Su precio será de 370 dólares norteamericanos, unos 290 euros al cambio.
