Aside from Twitter  and Social Networking apps, another interesting set of apps available right now on the iPad App Store are search-related. I scoured through the App Store to get the most significant of these search-related iPad apps – and found 8 of them. Here are 8 search-related apps that you might want to check out.

Zillow Real Estate Search

This iPad app lets you view photo galleries of home's on the iPad's large screen and tap, swipe, pinch and drag to see Zestimate home values , homes for sale, homes for rent, and more. The app also lets you filter searches by price, beds, baths, and other filters, search by monthly payment, view full-screen color photos, save searches, get push notifications, email homes to friend as well as share homes on Facebook. Yellowbook.com Mobile Search

If you need to find local businesses and other related information while on the move, you might want to get this app from the iPad App Store. This app features local business search, GPS location, maps and driving directions. It lets you view business websites and videos, save business details to your Contacts and sort items alphabetically or by distance to your current location. (Free) iTunes link.

Meta Flavor Restaurant Search

This is  a pretty useful app for searching and comparing millions of restaurants and dishes. It lets you search by cuisine, restaurant's name, and even by ingredient. The app also remembers your preferences and makes smart recommendations the next time you use the app. (Free) iTunes link.

Search Maestro (For Google)

Simply put, this iPad app lets you do Google searches on your iPad. It allows you save your searches and then browse them later. It also lets you save web pages, browse the internet fast, view current page in Safari and view searches even while your iPad is offline. (Price: $1.99) iTunes link.

DishFinders

Like Meta-Flavor, this app lets you search for specific dish and discover what other people have to say about this dish. You can browse through all the dishes that have been reviewed on a particular restaurant as well as submit your own reviews. The app also encourages users to share their dishes including photos of the finish product. (Free) iTunes link.

Searcher

Searcher is a fast web search tool for your iPad. It currently supports Google.com, google.de, google.fr, Wikipedia, Amazon.com, Amazon.uk, amazon.de, amazon.fr, YouTube, Twitter, Wolfram Alpha, Yaho and Leo.org for translation. (Price: $1.99) iTunes link.

QuickFind

QuickFind is a pretty straightforward search tool for your iPad. It lets you search popular multiple sites at the same time. The app utilizes the iPad's huge screen to come up with two column interface where the right column serves as display for your web browser. (Free) iTunes link.

JobServe Connect

One of the few, if not the only Job search tool available for your iPad. This app lets you search for jobs from a global database of over 40,000 job openings. It also lets you apply for a job quickly. And if you register for an account at Jobserve, you can view your latest jobs applied for, save and run searches, and get useful candidate messages from your online Jobserve account. Cold Calling For Links: Advice from Door to Door Sales

About 8 years ago, I was offered a job in door to door sales. I thought it would probably be the scariest, hardest job I could ever do. So I took it. I figured if I could spend a summer selling coupon cards to strangers on their doorsteps then I could probably do anything.

I was right. I learned that selling anything door to door pretty much sucks. But I also learned that being positive and resilient is an asset in any line of work. Hell, my door to door sales pitch even helped me get hired to my first SEO job. Link builders can pull a lot out of a sales person's bag of tricks; here are just a few of the ones that have proven true in my experience.

Have a Great Opening, and a Killer Pitch

As a door to door sales person, or a Jehovah's Witness, you can literally see when you're about to have a door slammed in your face and you've lost a sale. We don't get that advantage through a computer screen, which is why it's all the more important to have a great opening and a killer pitch. The best sales pitches are always the ones that don't sound at all like sales pitches. They don't sound practiced, or canned or pushy. They sound like conversation, they sound like logic.

Going into a link request is no different. Whether you believe in establishing a relationship with someone before asking for a link, or trying to consummate the relationship from the initial email, your best case scenario is a great opening line and a game plan. In an email your opening is a Subject line. Making the Subject line unique and compelling is as important to link building as a descriptive title tag is to SEO. From there creating an email that will get read and responded to is the ultimate goal. It needs to be honest, human and it should probably employ a few other sales techniques.

Be Brief

One trick we used in sales was to always tell every prospect that you "only have a moment to talk", this creates urgency and, lets them know you don't plant to annoy them all afternoon. Your email should be quick as well, don't write a novel's worth of information about your site, your asset or your personal life just keep it short and to the point.

Include only the essential information, and of course a human connection which can be created through simple observation.

Take Cues From Your Environment

When I was standing on a doorstep, I always used the few interminable seconds waiting for someone to come greet me to assess the environment for an "in".  Sometimes it was a dog house, a child's toys, a well groomed flower bed, a Yankees flag. There was always some piece of information that could help me to establish a rapport. I also discovered the more honest the association was, the better. People tend to know when someone is faking it, and insincerity can be a deal breaker.

Link builders can do this with even greater ease than a door to door sales person. We didn't have the luxury of hanging out on the porch for half an hour looking for common ground; we had a minute, tops. When link building, sometimes it can be as simple as using someone's name, or as elaborate is discovering that you and your link target both share a passion for Hemmingway. Whenever possible take the extra step to build a connection. Remember no amount of kinship makes up for touting a piece of crap. You should have a link worthy asset and a legitimate reason that you think your link would fit on this site. Hopefully your reason is better than "I'm supposed to send out as many emails as possible for my minimum wage". Use what you learn about someone on their site to create your email and be brief, be personable and offer a reasonable explanation for why their site would make a good home for your link.

Create Ownership 

When you're selling an item door to door, they tell you the first thing to do is get the item in the target's hands. It's called creating ownership. The idea was that holding something increases the sense of possession, and once someone believes something belongs to them, they were supposedly more inclined to purchase it. I got my products handed back to me enough to know that's not always the case.

However, the trick is still valid and useful. In link building we can't physically put something in someone's hands, so instead we must get inside people's heads. People like linking to places that mention their site, it enhances their own credibility. It's not about you, it's about them and how they benefit. That's why award badges, particularly awards given based on actual merit rather than arbitrary or transparent link baiting schemes, can be so successful.

Crossing the threshold from virtual life into real life by creating a tangible connection to a site is another method of creating ownership. Debra Mastaler's Passive Links article gives a great example of that. She created ownership on two levels, ownership of content, and ownership of a new shirt.

Also, allowing people to break news can help them feel ownership of something new. People enjoy being the one to introduce something new in their networks, even if they did not create it themselves. Being the first to share a great new viral video is a coveted spot among any circle of friends. Helping someone to be that guy can only help you.

Re-Cover the Same Territory

When you are going through any given neighborhood at noon on a Wednesday most people answering their doors are elderly, unemployed, or homemakers. The majority people are at work. Which is why as a rule, you always make a second pass at any given territory, once during the day and once again in the evening. In link building, the end goal for re-covering territory is the same, to pick up anything you missed on the first pass.

That that doesn't mean harass someone who turned you down, or didn't answer you.  But sometimes, if you find a really promising website, it may be worth following up an initial attempt to make contact. Perhaps you were ignored, and a little extra nudge could get you noticed. But don't stand there on someone's porch ringing their doorbell for 15 minutes just because you can see them watching Wheel of Fortune through the window, accept that he's purposefully NOT answering the door and get on with your life.

For the same reasons you might revisit the same house in the field, it's worth re-visiting specific searches. Things may have changed. Real-time search, news, blogs and the constant influx of new information create new relevant link opportunities every day. Something this week may be relevant to something you did 6 months ago. Re-covering the old territory in the future can also reveal something that wasn't there the first time around

It's also smart to run the same searches in different verticals, news, images, scholarly documents, etc. With so many different methods of distributing information, exploring only the one leaves several unexplored.

It can be easy for a link builder to become fixated moving forward. Descending, harvesting, feeding and moving on like the Aliens from Independence Day. But a good site or a good contact should never be wasted simply because it doesn't fit the goal of the moment. Keeping a log of contacts which fall under the heading of "not now, but maybe someday" ensures you always have a well of un-tapped resources.

Be Brave

The last, and most important take away from the world of door to door sales is universal and it applies not just to link building, but life. Be. Brave.  When in doubt, go for it. Never be afraid to ask for a link, trust your instincts and believe in the value of what you are offering. In the field, you could easily spend 8 hours getting kicked off of porches and at the end of the day you've spent more on gas and lunch than you took home in cash. In the filed there was something they called "negging out". It was an expression we used when someone lost their positive attitude. You could see it in their face, and their posture and you knew, that too many "no's" had taken its toll.  Whether you're link building, or just trying to survive the struggles of day to day life on planet earth, with faith, courage and resilience anything is possible.  Trust in the numbers game, if you keep trying, sooner or later in a sea of no's there will be a yes. In the mean time wear the blinders of a thoroughbred and be fearless.

Does Your Company Twitter? 10 Tips To Become A Great Business "Twit"

What do you think of when I mention Twitter?  Do you think about teenagers posting what color socks their wearing to school today?  Or do you think about the sales/conversions your company makes by utilizing these accounts?  Social media is a fantastic way to increase your brand exposure.  By creating a successful Twitter account you essentially have a direct line to your customers.  Utilize the following tips to gain "followers" and to maximize your company's Twitter experience.

1. Carefully Choose Your Twitter User Name

Make sure you put some thought into what username you want to use on Twitter.  Do you want to use your company name, brand name, or your full name?  Each one of these types of user names has an advantage, for instance we use @DKS_Systems for our Twitter user name.  @billgates chose to use his real name even though he is the founder of his company Microsoft.  It's up to you; decide which one is the best fit for your company.

2. Your Twitter Image

Your Twitter image is what everyone will see next to your username.  Every time you publish a tweet people will see this image.  Does it make sense to put your company's logo as the image? Alternatively you can post a picture of yourself.  Considering Twitter is a social network I like to suggest that everyone posts a picture of themselves.  This I believe adds more of a community feel and less of a B2B connection.  I find that it's easier to get people to follow your account with a personal picture than a company logo.  This is an issue you can always test as Twitter easily allows you to update your picture within your account settings.

3. Twitter Profile Optimization

The search engines will index your Twitter profile so it's important to optimize as much as you can.  Below are a couple fields you can change to help your profiles search rankings.

  • Title Tag – This is your "Name" followed by your Twitter user name.
  • Meta Description – Google shows your profiles "BIO" as your meta description.  So keep in consideration whatever you type here is what will show up in the search engines.
  • Your website URL – take the www out of your URL.  This way people can see more of the actual web address.  Twitter only shows 17 characters.  Our website address just makes the cut and shows "http://dkssystems"

4. Customize Your Twitter Background

Twitter allows you to create and display your own custom background.  Create a background image that displays more information about your company!  (I will freely admit that I too really need to work on this tip!)   This is by far the best resource I can point you to on how to create the best Twitter background for your account.

5. Be careful who you follow

You may not have any control over who follows your account however you do have full control over who you choose to follow.  Don't follow any accounts that you wouldn't be willing to explain to your boss or even your clients.  I have never seen this being an issue however it would be a real shame to lose a sale/client over you choosing to follow a specific political candidate or questionable celebrity.  This tip doesn't apply to every user; however it's something to keep in the back of your mind.

6. Use Hash Tags In Your Tweets

It's very important that you use Twitter just like everyone else on the website.  #hashtags help categorize your tweet in with a specific topic.  If you're talking about SEO you might want to consider adding #SEO at the end of your tweet.  This way anyone who is searching for "SEO" tweets will find yours in the results.

7. Don't Spam People Who Follow You!

Remember how I suggested that you be careful who you follow on Twitter?  If you send out ten tweets in a one minute period your followers are going to be annoyed.  If you annoy them enough they may just un-follow your account.  You need to publish your tweets sparingly.  I would suggest a couple of tweets an hour at most.  This is just a general rule and is something you will need to figure out as you get use to your Twitter account.

8. It's Not All About Business

Don't bombard your followers with your company's products and or offers.  Twitter is a virtual hang out space for everyone.  If someone in real life got in your face and tried to make you buy something wouldn't you avoid them each time you saw them on the street?  However, if one of your "buddies" suggested you go see the latest movie or buy a certain product wouldn't you take it into a little more consideration?  Make sure to tweet about everything.  The color of your socks, your amazing fast food lunch, and a funny joke someone told you etc.  After several of these posts you can slide one or two tweets advertising your product or service.

9. Think Before You Speak… I Mean Tweet

How many times have you read in the news about a celebrity or a successful business person putting their foot in their mouth?  People don't always think before they tweet.  Twitter is not a place for you to complain about your clients or customers.  You don't want to say anything that will sabotage your brand or company either.  My rule of thumb is before I submit a tweet I ask if my boss would be ok with reading this.  If I think it's questionable I will re-phrase it or choose not to tweet that message.   Just remember to think before you tweet, if you don't you may get yourself and or your company in trouble!

10. Personal Messages and Re-Tweets

As mentioned before, Twitter is all about being social.  Talk to your followers, ask them questions, and make sure to answer any questions they may ask you.  You want to maintain a form of friendship with your followers.  Twitter allows customers/clients to have a direct access to you that they otherwise wouldn't have.  Take advantage of this, write them personal messages. (Tweets only they can see)  Also make sure to re-tweet (RT) their tweets if you find it interesting.  Building these relationships may help you create some sales in the future.

Google to Ask Buzz Users to Reconfirm Privacy Settings

Anytime now, when you click on the Buzz tab on your Gmail account Google will ask you to confirm or change your privacy settings. The announcement is yet to be posted by Google but both Mashable and BBC News have spilled the beans out that Google will be admitting that they  "didn't get everything right."  Hence, it has been carrying some serious privacy tweaks since Google Buzz was launched.

And while Google may have remedied the privacy threats of Google Buzz to some new users, those who have activated Google Buzz before Google carried out the privacy updates may not be affected. So, if you're one of these users you need to confirm or change your privacy settings again.

Google will gradually roll this out to Google Buzz users.  The confirmation page will look like this:

This is actually the old  Google Buzz privacy settings. Nothing has been changed. Google just want to give users a chance to change or confirm their current privacy settings.

When to Take a Social Media Break

Twitter became my priority. It became my obsession.

I should've been shutting down and enjoying a moment in life, a moment I can never get back.

Instead, my mind was focused on how to condense the moment into 140 characters and share it.

Looking back, I lost memories and failed to get the most out of many experiences because I was too busy thinking about how to share. I lost track of the moment.

Around 3 months ago, I decided enough was enough. My life had become a massive extended relationship. I was losing focus on the core people, and priorities, in my life. I was spreading myself too thin for fear of not 'sharing', or turning my back on social media.

So, I decided it was time to take a serious break and shut down.

This never meant my online relationships were inconsequential. It meant that I chose spending uninterrupted, focused time with my new fiancée over swapping snippets online. It meant that I'd rather be in the pool throwing my 3 kids than sitting on the sidelines with a Blackberry. It meant that actually talking to my fiancée was a more productive way to spend my time than thinking of things to say online, and hoping they were clever enough to be repeated.

Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting a complete abandonment of social media. I'm suggesting that, in my case, it was time to walk away and get a better handle on it. It was time for me to devote my life to my immediate network, not just my extended network. It was time for me to justify the time I spent, in all aspects of my personal and professional life, with results.

Here are 10 things I learned during my social media break.

  1. People in my extended network understood my need to focus on my immediate network more than I thought. They didn't take it personally.
  2. My immediate network noticed I was paying attention to them much more.
  3. I would touch base with my online friends in other ways that were much more personal.
  4. People from my extended network reached out and became what I would consider real life friends.
  5. When I would check back in online, not much changed. Many of the same people were saying the same things.
  6. The extra time I now have improved my quality of life.
  7. Social media was very much an all or none proposition for me. If I wasn't doing it actively, part-time participation lacked interest (excluding my desire to make sure friends are well).
  8. I came away with a much better concept of how to manage my time, and what it should be devoted to.
  9. My driving improved greatly.
  10. My closest relationships became closer, and new relationships flourished, while my extended relationships remained pretty much the same.

I very much wonder how may other people have felt out of control with their social media usage. Have you ever wanted to just walk away from it and take a break? 3 Ways to Generate a Tag Cloud off Google SERPs

Looking at the words that accompany your main search term in SERPs is a great help in keyword research: this way you are able to analyze your keyword neighboring terms and words that appear in the same context.

Before playing with any of the below listed tools, set Google to show 100 results per page (for the tools to have more data to analyze):

1. Search Cloudlet

Search Cloudlet analyzes Google SERPs and extracts most frequent words representing them in a tag cloud based on the frequency of occurrence in SERPs:

The tag can be kept hidden most of the time and only opened after the click.

2. Sensebot

Sensebot uses text mining and multidocument summarization to extract sense from Google search results. It means, instead of just looking at the page snippets and titles (like Search Cloudlet does), the tool analyzes the content of each page returned in SERPs and summarizes it.

When you do a search on Google, a cloud of key concepts appears on top of search results. You can click on a concept to do a subsequent search, focusing on the concept. You can also click the "Show text" button, and a text summary of content of the search results will be generated and displayed on the same page.

From options (accessed via Tools -> Addons) you can set the tag cloud look and feel: for example, see the cloud only after clicking the button and position it on top of the page:

3. DeeperWeb

Deeperweb is a FireFox addon that offers to "find better search terms extracted from your search results". It can be used to extract words or word combinations.

How exactly it extracts the tag cloud is actually unclear because there is no technology information on the page. Do they mine directly into returned snippets like Search Cloudlet or do they employ some analysis of the actual web pages that popped in the results?

From what it looks like, I can tell that they seem to only "look" at the search results page itself without mining deeper:

3 Ways to Generate a Tag Cloud off Google SERPs



2010 Google Toolbar PageRank Update : PageRank Bunny

Did the Google PageRank Bunny visit your site over this past weekend to drop off a basket of juicy Google [Toolbar] PageRank goodness? Or did he raid your fridge and hop away with some of your site's PageRank?

Over the weekend the first Google 'Toolbar' PageRank update of 2010 occurred which left some site owners quite happy, some a bit bewildered and did not affect many. Now, we should all be reminded that 'Toolbar' PageRank is different than Google PageRank because the PageRank displayed in the toolbar is not 100% reflective of the way Google judges the value of a website. A site without PageRank can still rank well in the Google index. A Site with a PageRank 2 can outrank a PageRank 8. Sometimes, Google will taketh PageRank away, but that will not result in your site ranking lower or less traffic.

It's just one of many metrics that Google may use, and they seem to have a lot of fun sharing this Toolbar PageRank 'snapshot' with webmasters and bloggers, as a rise and drop in PageRank can lead to many new decisions by publishers and moreso, lead them to the temptation of monetizing that PageRank with paid links … a BIG NO NO according to Google Webmaster Guidelines.

So, that being said … I still know that PageRank is the center of the Google universe according to many webmasters and publishers AND although it's just a "little green bar" … I'd like to know .. How did the 2010 Google PageRank Update affect your website?
