Google News Becomes More Personal and Social

Google is rolling out several updates to its News homepage to make it easier to navigate through relevant news, highlight interesting stories that would otherwise get buried into the streams of news influx that gets into the homepage as well as an easier news sharing feature.

The updated Google News homepage, which will be rolled initially to U.S. users now include a major section in the homepage called "News for you." This is a stream of headlines which are automatically tailored to user interests. You can personalize this further by accessing the "edit personalization" option to specify which sub-stream of Google News you are very much interested in.  This option also lets you choose how you want to view the news stream, that is either by section or list view. You can always reset the personalization you've made just by hitting the "Reset personalization" option and it will clear all the preferences you've made.

Google News also now gives you more control of what news you want to see on your Google News homepage. You can specify which news sources you'd like to see more or less often. In addition, you can still see the major news of the day. And Google News will add links to topics that various news sources are offering and present them to you in the Top Stories section of the Google News homepage.

And of course, Google News now makes it easier for you to share story clusters with other people through Buzz, Google Reader, Facebook and Twitter. You can see these sharing options at the top-right of each of the story cluster displayed on the Google News homepage.

How I Drove Over 1.3 Million Pageviews through Digg for $90K in Ad Revenue

This case study covers social media strategy I executed last fall where I drove over 1.3 million pageviews to a microsite in less than four days for about $90K in ad revenue.

The bulk of that traffic was driven on the first day of promotion. The url was submitted to Digg.com. The url was also sent to bloggers who posted similar content on their web sites. In this video I recount my journey from when I just started to optimize websites for more search engine exposure about 7 years ago to one of the highest revenue generating projects I executed in less than a week.

Weekly Search &Social News: 06/29/2010

Well I am a day late, but we at least made it to another edition of '7 Days of Search and Social' – there was some interesting readin' last week from the rise of Facebook the 'search engine' to a distinct lean towards the business side of things. Speaking of which, a huge congrats goes out to the SEJ/Search and Social gang whom made news with their merger winth 10e20. Let's not waste any more time and jump right in.

Let's get this party started!

Lead Story

FaceBook SEO?

It's not often that we lead the newsletter off with Social search stuff, but that is precisely the case this week. And the social spot in question is one of the heavyweights, FaceBook. It seems they've launched a new search system from their OpenGraph protocol. As they mentioned, "all Open Graph-enabled web pages will show up in search when a user likes them".

This involves including some new meta-data and I did have a look at them over the weekend and it does seem interesting. First a little bit of coverage;

And over at AimClear there was also some timely coverage on potential SEO for FaceBook;

Facebook SEO Ranking Factors, 2010 Study Results

Now, one thing that I have gone off on before is that I generally don't consider Twitter search nor any site specific search to be a search engine. For me a search engine searches multiple sites and ranks them accordingly. Anyway, splitting hairs.

It will be interesting to see where this all leads… more on it soon as I dig in more.

Talk of the Town

How To Take Down A Competitors Website: Legally – was a rather interesting if not borderline nefarious post from the gang at Blue Hat SEO.

There Is No Such Thing As Search Neutrality, Because The Whole Point Of Search Is To Recommend What's Best – it may be one helluva a long title, but it's a damn good read. A search engine is entirely about subjective decisions…it's a fact, it's life, get over it.

More proof that Google is not really using Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)? – ok, while it may be 'Dave Bait' and I don't entirely agree with the analysis, I did add me 2c in the comments on this one, so it is worth keeping. Always an area that peeps tend to be confused around.

SEO Flows Through Everything – was an interesting strategic ditty over on SEO Book that looks at how SEO is an important aspect of the top-down systemic aspects of any online business. Great stuff from the Book as always.

SEO Tutorial: Assessing a Keyword Domain for Purchase – Does Buying Make Sense or Not? – this is actually an area that a lot of folks don't write about all that often. Domaining is a common area for a lot of SEOs… nice to see this one.

3 Bare Bones SEO Techniques Small Business Sites Can't Afford to Ignore – Melanie Nathan dropped an interesting post over on SEP that hammers home the three core areas any SME should understand, especially keyword research.

Four Engines, Four Ways To Generate Links – Debra Mastaler looks at some analysis of the big 4 (?) for link prospecting.

Here is Why Now Is The Best Time To Be In The SEO Business - it seeems Hamlet Batista is back on the scene after a long hiatis and is ready to kick ass. He outlines why NOW is the time to get into the SEO game… hmmm… I thought it was dead? Who knew?

Common Mistakes Big Brands Make in SEO – this one is nearly a no brainer. As most of us know, the big brands and large corps tend to be REAL bad when it comes to SEO. Blogstorm had a great analysis that shows some of the more well know issues.

Control-Freak Execs and Online Marketing – speaking of clients, I also enjoyed this little diddy from Vanessa over on Bruce Clay that deals with an area close to my heart; anal micromanager types.

Adapting SEO for Personalized Search – was a post from yours truly over on Search Engine Journal which looks at personalized search (once again), how search engines go about it and what you can do to be positioned.

PPC Tips for the Small Business Owner

It can be difficult for the little guy to compete with corporations¾moderate SMB programs are no match for endless marketing budgets and the resulting inflated keyword costs. Working in an agency, I see this first hand every day. But I also see areas where small business owners and franchise stores can compete if they become smarter with their strategies.

The following tips provide the framework for developing a successful and cost effective pay per click campaign.

Time/Day Parting – Google allows advertisers to determine the day of week or even the time of day they want their ads to display. This can be a very useful tool for small business advertisers who know when their customers are most likely to look for their product or service. By setting your ads to display at only high performance times you increase the effectiveness of your campaign and reduce your costs.

Ad Scheduling.png

Match Types – Gone are the days of simply adding keywords that are all set to broad match and hoping for a return. Sure, casting a larger net brings in more traffic, but it also punishes your budget. The quality of that traffic might also suffer depending on the chosen keywords. Try using the available match types, especially exact match, to control costs and which searches are actually displaying your ads.

Negative Keywords – Selecting negative keywords to offset unwanted traffic is an absolute must for any campaign, large or small. For example, f a florist that sells only fresh flowers and plants might want to include the negative "artificial" to prevent traffic from artificial flower type keywords. Using negatives also allows you to pursue higher volume keywords without the exposure to unrelated searches.

Geo Targeting – According to a 2009 TMP/comScore report, 80% of consumers expect businesses in their search results to be within 15 miles of their location. This definitely doesn't apply to all industries and regions, but it should provide a starting point with your targeting. It's important to mention that with Google's targeting granularity, you could potentially target your business out of traffic if it's set so small that only a few people will see the ads.

Other Search Engines- Google has the lion share of the search market, but they also carry the highest bid prices. Bing and the like might not offer the volume that Google does; however, smaller search engines often have lower bid prices, which ultimately produce lower conversion costs. Test out a small budget on these other engines to start looking at your PPC efforts as a portfolio.

Keyword Development–The Google traffic estimator tool might show you that the keyword "new shoes" generates 1,500,000 searches each month, but that doesn't mean it's a quality keyword for your ad group. To maximize your budget, think locally and specifically. For example, if you're in the printing business, expand past the generic and more expensive "printing" keywords;  pair them up with location identifiers to better define your product and audience. By using the keyword "printing shops Denver 80202," you pay less for a consumer that is further along in the buying cycle.

Trouble Linkbuilding? Write the Copy

Finding new ways to attract inbound links is one of the hardest parts of SEO. Finding quality sites offering links with quality anchor text is a tedious process many in the industry shy away from. Organic, authentic link building is difficult, no doubt about it. But it is this difficulty that brings out the best in SEO practitioners.

Link building with The White Stripes

Jack White explains the benefits of constraints in the White Stripes documentary Under the Great Northern Lights. Given the self-imposed rules of a three-color palate and a two-person band, the White Stripes have to reach the heights of their creativity to produce world-class rock rifts. It is this type of crucible-induced creativity that Internet marketers must strive for when earning links.

A great way to earn the links you crave is writing the copy yourself. Become part of the conversation while ensuring your site receives the linkjuice you need.

Content on Demand

I use Article Marketing on almost every SEO campaign I run, but for projects with a larger budget, I turn to content driven sites for in-bounds links. Producing copy for sites like these requires an elevated degree of research, depth and editing.

As media companies turn their focus to hyperlocal coverage on sites like Aol's Patch.com, local writers and bloggers are receiving a lot of attention. This is where your SEO and communications skills come into play. You can write an article focused on your client, or an industry in which your client's products are relevant. By drafting the copy yourself, you control the anchor text and the keyword density of each post.

Getting  Setup

Here is a list of hyperlocal, citizen-journalist sites that each SEO-er should be aware of for projects like these:

These sites are perfect for your well-crafted copy as they each possess high domain authority and visitor traffic. Therefore, a link from these hyperlocal sites produces great link building results.

When they say, "Content is King" they are absolutely right. But you don't have to stop at blogging. That's just one copywriting content tool in your arsenal. Like Jack White reminds us, it's when you feel the most constrained, it's time to amp up the creativity.

El Motorola Droid 2 podría presentarse pronto

droid2-android2
