Google to Stop Selling Nexus One Online

Five months after it started selling Nexus One  via its online store, either Google finally realized that this is probably not the best way to distribute its smartphone or the smartphone is not really selling at all.  So, Google just announced that it will stop selling Nexus One on its web store. No, Google is not abandoning the Nexus One, but will just utilize other ways of distributing the phone. You know? The way Apple is selling the iPhone or other Android phones which are being release through mobile carrier retailing.

The Official Google Blog tells us:

While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not. It's remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it's clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from.

With that, Google is implementing the following changes:

More retail availability. As we make Nexus One available in more countries we'll follow the same model we've adopted in Europe, where we're working with partners to offer Nexus One to consumers through existing retail channels. We'll shift to a similar model globally.

From retail to viewing. Once we have increased the availability of Nexus One devices in stores, we'll stop selling handsets via the web store, and will instead use it as an online store window to showcase a variety of Android phones available globally.

Will this encourage mobile carriers to carry the Nexus One now? Will Verizon change its mind and finally decides to offer the Google Nexus One?

Easily Create a Page Heading Map in FireFox

I have previously outlined the importance of heading stucture for accessibility and usability as well listed some best practices as to using h1-h6 tags. Today I am reviewing an awesome FireFox addon called HeadingsMap that allows:

  • To quickly check how consistent and logical the heading structure of the page is;
  • To navigate through the page using the headings.

All in all, I was pleased to find such a useful and usable tool.

Get it installed as a regular FireFox addon and notice a tiny icon added to the lower left corner of your browser:

Headings map icon

Clicking the icon toogles the sidebar that contains the current "Document Structure".

Headings map

1. Evaluate your page semantic structure

The tool makes it easy to quickly analyze if your page headings are properly used:

  • It shows all headings in the document, including those hidden with CSS techniques or those without content.
  • It warns when there are no headings in the document.
  • It warns when there are skipping level in the headings structure.

2. Quickly navigate from heading to heading

Another great feature of the tool allows to quickly go from heading to heading by clicking them in the sidebar. When an item is selected in the sidebar, the heading is highlighted, so you can jump to it (I tried it and seemed a great time saver. It makes "scanning" web pages much easier).

Navigate from heading to heading

The options dialog allows to modify the highlighting colors as well as disable any of the features in case you don't need one:

Google Chrome Powered Netbook in Two Weeks?

Still remember that quick poll which Loren did several months ago when Google announced that the Chrome OS will be targeted primarily for netbooks? Majority of  you voted that you will buy the Google Chrome  powered netbooks when it comes out. Well, better psyche up yourselves folks as reports had it that the first of such netbook will soon be launched.

Actually, let me retract a bit here. The said Google Chrome powered device will be demoed at the upcoming Computex 2010 electronics fair happening in Taipei on June 1-5. And guess which brand will be the first to run the Chrome OS? – The lucky manufacturer is none other th an  Acer. What's not clear here is what the Acer device will be? Is it going to be a netbook, tablet or smartbook?

A Google Chrome powered netbook seems to be the easiest route for Acer. But given the renewed popularity of the tablet, thanks to Apple's iPad Acer might also demo a tablet  instead. But then, if Acer wants to come up with tablet PC of their own that will rival the iPad, they can just use the Android OS.

A netbook running Google Chrome OS would certainly be more exciting than a tablet. Acer has already captured the netbook market, it would be safer and more practical for them to concentrate on netbooks instead.

Going back to the question, and modifying the premise a bit – are you still going to buy a Google Chrome powered netbook given that the iPad is already out?
