Yahoo Buys Social Sport Site Citizen's Sports

Yahoo is beefing up its Sports content site as it acquires social sport startup Citizen's Sports.  In case you're not aware, Citizen's Sports are responsible for the popular Fantasy Sports Game in Facebook.

By acquiring Citizen's Sports, Yahoo hopes to strenghten its social strategy of enriching, aggregating and distributing social content from across the web while offering social experience especially since Citizen's Sports has proven itself in the social sports industry with its innovative applications.

In fact millions of people are said to using Citizen's Sports various social and mobile products including fantasy sports, live scores and up-to-the minutes sports news. These will blend will with Yahoo Sports content to create a seamless experience for all of us sports fans.

Yahoo Sports boasts of more than 39 million monthly unique users in the U.S.  While Citizen's Sports popular applications that work with Facebook, MySpace, hi5, iPhone and Android span across professional, college and high school sports. These two sports services are definitely a match-made-in heaven.

The acquisition deal is set to commence in the second quarter 0f 2010. Unfortunately no finacial details were disclosed yet.

Gesture Search, Swipe N' Search for Google Android Phones

Google continues to shower mobile phones running its Android OS including its own Nexus One phone with great features one after another. Previously it just made the cool Gesture Search available for all phones running Android OS version 1.5+.  And now,  Google Maps for Mobile has just been updated to version 4.1.

The first new feature that has been added to the latest version of Google Maps for Mobile is search n' swipe. First, the Maps for Mobile search results pages now displays all the information related to your search. This was previously displayed as tabs. There are also new buttons that you can tap on and will show you places on the map, directions in getting to those places and even option to see those places in Street View.

The new mobile search results page also now makes it easier for you to navigate through various information about particular business establishment that you see on the map. You can swipe of the results page to the left or right  to navigate between pages that will yield more reviews, ratings, buzz and all.

Another new feature is the Latitude Widget and Live Wallpapers for Nexus One and Android 2.1 devices. You can add live Maps widget to your phone's home screen to make it easier for you to access Google Maps for Mobile. And for Nexus one and Android 2.1 phone users, you can now also use those live, real-time updating maps as your phone's wallpaper.

The last of the new features of Google Maps for Mobile 4.1 is support for multiple Google accounts. You can now switch between Google accounts that you want synced from your computer to your Android device.

Get Certified & Get Connected With Social Media- Six Easy Ways

Interacting between both students and faculty is convenient and easy with the Market Motive social media course I am taking. I know some of you are reading this thinking "I would hope people would be interacting within in a social media class because after all, isn't that where the social part comes from." Let's not jump to judging and assume that everyone who enrolled is familiar with social networking. I won't even assume everyone in the class knows how to take an online course. There is a good chance those enrolled, or those of you out there who are considering enrolling may have never taken an online course before. Interacting online is important for beginners as well as for those who are more advanced.Communicating is simple with Market Motive because despite your level of comfort with the social media curriculum and taking an online course in general, there is an option for getting assistance, keeping up, and getting ahead.

Ways to get connected in a Market Motive Online Course: 


1) Weekly Faculty Conference Calls

Each week, individual faculty members host office hour style conference calls with students.  The faculty instructors are very patient. The calls help make sure we are learning the most current social media practices and are able to assess recent changes in the marketing landscape.  There is a date and time as well as a dial in number that is sent to all the student e-mails. The conference calls are optional but very helpful because given that it is an online course, having the opportunity to vocalize with all the students is often beneficial for various reasons.

2) Market Motive Follow lists

My Social Media course has a Twitter follow group for both faculty and students.

3) Group e-mail option

There is an e-mail address that will send out all of its received messages to the entire class. This is a great way to get a hold of all the students very quickly.

4) Forums

For those late night questions that can't wait for the next conference call, students are provided with a faculty monitored forum where all answers are guaranteed to be authoritative.  I've noticed that most questions are answered in a few hours either by the faculty or by former graduates.  Because the forums are private to members, the sharing is quite open and the answers are immediately applicable to our projects or to real-life marketing.  Many of the SEJ readers may be familiar with forums, and know the power of participating in one. Anyone can ask questions or suggest a topic for discussion. If a specific week has a popular social media topic, then forums are a remarkable place for group thoughts, opinions and debates.   I love forums because they allow students to get answers to questions and get feedback on things they may have been hesitant to ask themselves. Students can create personal profiles with avatars, information about themselves, and websites they own, to keep up with who exactly it is they are talking to.

5) Ability to view and comment on other student assignments

Assignments for the social media course are to be completed after the required video viewings. Faculty and students can click on my assignments which I publish and they can view my work and comment on it. This has been useful to me for a few reasons. First of all, if I don't really understand an assignment or I just want to see how somebody else completed it, I am able to view other students completed work.  Secondly, the instructor has commented on my assignments each week in great detail. Sometimes, the instructor has said the topics I was writing about were very interesting and have requested I go into more detail.

6) Workshops

Workshops are optional but are a beneficial addition to the general course material. The Market Motive website has a tab dedicated to workshops taught by the faculty chair. These are really nice because all Market Motive students can access every workshop across all six disciplines despite what discipline the student has paid to participate in. (SEO, Social Media, Web Analytics, PPC, Online PR and Landing Page Conversion). The workshops can be very helpful in advancing your personal social media networking and marketing. Now, I don't want to get any comments about how ditzy I sound on this video- I swear I don't sound like that in real life. Something about webcams just doesn't flow well with me. I recorded many a video and, sadly, this was the best one. I happened to ramble alot on it but I hope you hang on through the whole video so you can post your video response! In addition to what I said in the video, it hit me after I recorded it that something else happened to me on social media that would have been far more fun to mention.

My bosses are trying to pimp me out to fight a bear during the summit. Ahhh yes, you can probably find the multiple posts due to the magic of Twitter hash-tags (#SSSS) showcasing their eagerness to see me duke it out with a live (and heavily clawed) animal. It started out as a ping, which turned into a tweet, which turned into multiple re-tweets…. now, this might be a fly by night rumor, or it might be true… but either way, I guess you'll have to upload your video response and try to win a free ticket to find out :)

As you can tell from my video there are absolutely no standards for how you record it. Use whatever webcam yo have- or even your iPhone if you want.

Be honest, don't hold back. Did you meet your boyfriend through social media? Say it. Did you get stalked through social media? Do tell. But only if it's not serious. I don't like hearing about harm happening to people via the internet… I'm talking about maybe having someone who loved to read your website constantly and always left you comments but you didn't know who they are. I guess I used the work "stalk" really loosely here. Did you win something or get randomly picked for a prize thanks to your social media account? Are you that girl that Conan O'Brien singled out to follow on Twitter and now you're famous!? Remember- the way to get the most votes/ratings is to just have something completely unexpected. Blogging in 2010: What You Need To Know

In spite of all the claims that Blogging is dead, the numbers show Blogs are still a great way to get your message out there and to gain exposure and credibility in your industry.

We'll get started with some interesting stats on "The State of the Blogosphere" and then I'll share some tips and advice for Blogging your way to more traffic, exposure and revenue.

  • More than 133,000,000 blogs have been indexed by Technorati since 2002
  • 77% of Internet users read blogs according to Universal McCann
  • Two-thirds of Bloggers are male  (c'mon ladies, start Blogging!)
  • More than half are married and more than half are parents
  • 60% are 18-44
  • 75% have college degrees and 40% have graduate degrees
  • One in four has an annual household income of $100K+
  • Around half of Bloggers are working on at least their second blog
  • 68% have been blogging for two years or more
  • 86% have been blogging for at least a year
  • 70% of all respondents say that personal satisfaction is a way they measure the success of their blog
  • 72% say they blog in order to share their expertise.
  • 61% say they blog in order to supplement their income.
  • 53% of professional Bloggers are interested in attracting new clients from blogging.
  • 72% of those who are self-employed and blogging are interested in attracting new clients.
  • 57% say that their future plans include blogging even more (including 74% of 18-24 year olds).
  • Part-Timers, Pros, and Self-Employed Bloggers are blogging as much as or more than ever (73%, 76% and 80%, respectively), while Hobbyists are blogging somewhat less.
  • 15% of Bloggers spend 10 or more hours each week blogging.
  • One in five Bloggers report updating on a daily basis.
  • The most common rate of updating is 2-3 times per week.
  • The majority of blogs use tags (85%).
  • 82% of respondents say that they post photos to their blog, making images the most popular form of multimedia.
  • Bloggers participate in an average of 5 activities to drive traffic to their blogs.
  • 72% of respondents are classified as Hobbyists, meaning that they report no income related to blogging
  • Of those who have monetized their blogging to at least some extent:

    • 54% are Part-Timers

    • 32% are Self-Employed Bloggers

    • 14% are Corporate Bloggers

  • 51% of Corporate Bloggers – 58 respondents – report receiving a salary for blogging.
  • 56% say that their blog has helped their company establish a positioning as a thought leader within the industry.
  • 58% say that they are better-known in their industry because of their blog

I've compiled a collection of tips and advice that I have found useful when Blogging.  Feel free to add your tips and advice in the Comments section below.

The very step is to ask yourself:   Why are you Blogging and what do you hope to accomplish?

Here are some of the common reasons to Blog:

  • To build brand awareness
  • To boost search engine rankings
  • To improve customer relations
  • To show knowledge & earn credibility
  • To get new clients/make sales

Once you have determined why you are Blogging, you need look at it from the other side…

Why would people want you to Blog? If you aren't meeting a need of theirs, they aren't likely to read your Blog – at least not more than once.

You  need to marry your goals with your customers wants and needs and come up with a Blogging plan that will help you reach your goals and will give your Blog visitors what they are after, so they will return, buy, spread the word about your Blog etc.

Let's look at a scenario here:

You sell kitchen ware – all the cool gadgets and tools that every kitchen must have.  Your goal is to sell more gadgets.

I'm online frantically googling recipes for crab dip because my mother-in-law just informed me she loves crab dip and I really need to impress her with my domestic skills.

I come across your Blog and find the most adorable dishes to serve dip in – but that doesn't help me now.  So I leave your Blog and go to another one that has a crab dip recipe that will blow my mother-in-law's mind.

If you had just added a couple recipes to put in those cute little dip bowls, I would have found your site helpful and would have likely returned to buy those dip bowls.

I'd also tell my friends about it.  So, you will likely still accomplish your goal of selling your gadgets and cool kitchen wares, but you also created someone out there in the world that is happy with your Blog and sees you as a helpful resource.  That's pretty valuable!

Remember, you need to satisfy your visitors needs first, or you will never reach your goals.  It also helps to remember that although you have a goal with your Blogging, you are ultimately Blogging for the site visitor and not for yourself.

Now that you've established your goals and you've made sure you are delivering information that will interest and compel your site visitors, you are good to get started!  Some more tips:

  • You should be reading the top Blogs in your industry to see what your competitors are doing, stay on top of industry news and track the Comments to see what your customers and potential customers are interested in and talking about.
  • Creating an open dialogue is the best way to be sure visitors will respond to your content.  Always invite people to comment.
  • Set up a Feedburner account.
  • Do RSS Submissions to increase your Blog's exposure.
  • Write "How to" articles, they are very popular and tend to draw a lot of attention.
  • Include an RSS Subscription option on the sidebar.
  • Make it easy for visitors to contact you. Always answer comments and questions.
  • Add podcasts.  Add video.  Add photos and images.
  • Consider the types of things that spread virally across the internet.  They are usually funny, outrageous, shocking, and unique.
  • After you've written a post, look at it with different eyes.  Ask yourself, if I came across this post on someone else's site would I care about it?  Does it have some kind of impact on me?
  • Optimize for the RSS feed – use keywords in title tag, less than 100 characters.  Most readers display feeds alphabetically – it helps to be an A or B.
  • Add a poll to your Blog.  This is a great way to get your readers involved and it can help you tailor your Blog's content, based on the feedback you get from your readers!  (Resource: Vizu is a site that lets you add free polls to your Blog).
  • One study found that only 16% of people read word for word online.  This stat reminds us that we need to write our Blogs (and web pages) so they are scan-friendly.  Someone should be able to scan and at a glance get the main points and also feel compelled to read further.
  • Be controversial.  Be bold.  Have an opinion.  Have personality. So many Blogs are devoid of any real personality – especially corporate Blogs.  Blogs are meant to be informal (they must be professional and respectful) but that doesn't mean that you can't show some personality.  Write your Blog as if you were talking to people – not as if you were creating a corporate brochure.  Don't just report news, share your opinion and insights.  Don't be afraid to make a controversial statement.   People can get news from a zillion places online – make sure your Blog shares insights that they can't get anywhere else.
  • Invite Guest Authors. Getting a different voice – especially one that is well known is a great way to draw some attention to your Blog and give your readers some variety.
  • Idea: Develop a Glossary for your industry (make sure you use keywords in the Glossary).  The post will rank well and will become a resource for people.
  • If your Blog's goal is to promote you as an authority, interview other prominent Bloggers in your industry. Your own credibility will improve by association.
  • Build your online networks through services such as MyBlogLog, Twitter and Facebook.  Drive traffic to your Blog from these social sites.
  • Look at stats - determine which posts are most popular and get a feel for the topics and length of your most popular posts and then use that as a guideline going forward.

I kinda broke my own rules on this post, it's pretty dense with text and there are no images to pretty it up.  I just had so much I wanted to share with you.  So, do as I say and not as I do, kids!

To sum it all, up I'll say the same thing I said on my last post – pretty much any Blogging is better than no Blogging, so start writing!  Just keep these tips in mind and you'll do fine!

Blogging in 2010: What You Need To Know



Google's New Beta PPC Service Dubbed Remarketing

In the wake of Google's new PPC service, there has been speculation that the new service is simply a version of Remarketing. After touching upon the new service in Beyond Google PPC in 2010, Search Engine Journal has since had the opportunity to further investigate the system.  From the specifics of Remarketing and industry-related advantages, to beta previews and specifics of its configuration, explore all of the facets of Remarketing.

What is Remarketing?

Contrary to popular belief, Remarketing is not a new concept in terms of traditional marketing.  By definition, Remarketing is the effort taken to stimulate demand for a product that has experienced a decline in sales through branding it as a new product. In essence, Google's new system follows a simple principle; it notes which products the user has viewed as well as the user's behavior in regards to whether the user has declined to purchase the product.  Upon exiting the site and visiting a related site using the Google content ad network, Google's new system will then display an ad for the product in which the user previously abandoned. By retaining the user data in the system for a certain time period, the system will continue to serve ads for that product at any given opportunity.  This will prove to be beneficial to online stores since it's a common practice for users to abandon their shopping cart when scouring for the best price.

For example, if you have a user looking for "blue widgets," they will perform a search to find related sites organically or through PPC. The user clicks on your site and visits the "blue widget" page, adds the product to the shopping cart and decides that they want to research "blue widgets."  At this point, the user then continues searching on "blue widget" related sites while simultaneously, Google is displaying related "blue widget" ads on the pages they are visiting. The user is now shown a familiar site as well as the exact product they have already attempted to purchase. This method encourages the user to return back to your site, the site which they originally exited.

How Does It Work?

Remarketing not only accelerates demand for a product that has experienced a decline in sales, it also offers the ability to fine-tune your targeting and recruit highly qualified leads. Currently, Google utilizes pixels to tag users in the system.  The code is often added to the product page and shopping cart page to detect user interaction and abandonment.  The location varies based upon targeted products or brands.  The tracking pixel creates user lists that are managed via the Adwords campaign panel. Audiences must be created based on your specific targets.

As illustrated above, audiences are separated based upon the lists created via the conversion pixel. Remarketing user lists are created at an account level and can be added to the Ad groups. This section also operates as the location where tracking tags are generated for one's site. Below demonstrates a sample of our private testing blurred-out.

As illustrated above, we have created two different types of audience lists. The Remarketing-type which uses the data mined from one's site using tracking.

The combination type allows you to mix and match lists, allowing you use of your Remarketing together or with other Google audience data.

Once a new audience is created, place your tags and begin tracking your users. At this juncture, you can create a new campaign, create ad groups for each brand/product you've targeted and process to navigate over to the audience tab and select one of your pre-created lists. We recommend using display ads with the site and product brand in which you are tracking. While textual ads are acceptable, users have a strong reaction to visual advertisements as opposed to textual ads directly relating to the abandoned product and website.

A minimum of one day should be allotted to build the user database, once the tracking has been placed for Google. The time frame will often vary based upon your current traffic. Google will handle the rest and report the data back to you via the Adwords panel.  A common characteristic to PPC is that testing plays an influential role in this system. Through consistent testing and improvement to your targets as well as your ads, you will not only see results, but value in terms of increased conversion rates.

What Are The Benefits Of Remarketing?

Since Remarketing via Google Adwords is still in beta testing, there hasn't been an official announcement or documentation released. The concept of Remarketing is already being utilized on other ad networks. For example, according to Advertise.com reports , "Remarketing has been shown to improve ad response up to 400 percent across several Advertise.com clients." There is added value in the concept of Remarketing, as it has already proven influence on other ad networks.

The valuable users targeted by your efforts are a significant contributing factor to conversion rates. Active users deciding on a product and have already conveyed interest through visiting a product page returns a significantly higher conversion rate. Remarketing allows you to concentrate a portion of the site's marketing budget on these specific users. ROI on this tactic will prove considerably higher than solely targeting keywords or related content networks.

How to Start Remarketing?

Google's Remarketing service is currently only available in beta to certain agencies and companies. In order to access the service, you must await a public release. Other ad networks such as Advertise.com also offer this service via their network. In order to reap the benefits of this service, it's important to research minimum spends and costs of using other networks.  It has been predicted that the concept and use of Remarketing will continue grow in 2010. A public release of Google's take on the remarketing is highly anticipated. Not only is it a beneficial addition to a site's overall paid strategy, it also displays a promising improvement in ROI. While the service is fairly inexpensive in comparison to traditional PPC marketing, we will continue to monitor our current test, reporting to the SEJ audience with our results.

3 Simple Tools to Find Hidden Links (and Text)

Like on-page linked text analysis in general, identifying grey areas like hidden links (and text) should be an important and thoroughly considered step.

You will want to research hidden links:

(!) When you need to diagnose a recently hacked site;
(!) When you need to test a web design (some hidden text may be totally innocent and only appear illegal);
(!) When you need to identify the reason of the possible penalty;
(!) When you want to resd possibly rearch your competitors' grey tactics (and possibly report them);
(!) If want to find out if your hidden links can be found manually by search engineers or competitors;
(!) Etc.

    For the sake of an expriment I have hidden a link in my blog sidebar and will now try to find it using the three methods listed below.

    Now, what wil the tools say?

    1. Spam Detector

    Spam Detector Tool: This tool analyzes a web page, searching for red flags that search engines could consider spam: keyword stuffing, doorway farms and hidden text.

    Well, the tool didn't find the link, probably because:

    Any trick based on _javascript or on CSS positioning/layering will not be detected (for now).

    To be absolutely fair to the tool, I do use it from time to time and it successfully found some red flags for me previously. It just doesn't work for all kinds of red flags.

    2. Web Developer Toolbar (FireFox)

    With web developer toolbar you can play to your heart's content and if you spend half an hour or so you are more than likely to find hidden links if there are any on the page – but unlike with the above tool, it takes more time and you need to know or at least to suspect that there is something shady on the page:

    From the toolbar you can:

    1. CSS -> Disable Styles – > All Styles (if the hidden text is hidden using CSS, like in our case)
    2. Disable -> _javascript > All Javascript (if the hidden text is hidden using Javascript)
    3. Disable -> Page Colors (also works in our case, see the screenshots below)
    4. Images -> Disable images -> All Images (if the hidden text is hidden on the images)
    5. Images -> Hide Background Images
    6. Information -> Display > Link Details (to see the details of the hidden links)
    7. Information – > View Link Information
    8. Information -> Display Topographic Information
